Amine gas-treating units — typically using MDEA (methyldiethanolamine) — remove H₂S and CO₂ from natural gas. The amine solvent circulates continuously, and its cleanliness has a direct effect on foaming, heat-exchanger fouling and overall plant reliability. High-flow filtration is a core part of keeping the loop clean.
Typical filtration requirements
Amine loops are usually protected by large-format high-flow elements because of the volumes involved. Common characteristics of this duty:
- Large throughput per housing — favouring 6-inch-class high-flow elements over many small cartridges.
- Liquid-phase filtration of the lean and/or rich amine stream.
- Long service intervals — pleated media maximises dirt-holding capacity.
Common challenges
Foaming. Solids and degradation products act as foam stabilisers. Effective particulate removal upstream reduces foaming tendency.
Heat-stable salts and iron sulphide. Fine particulate such as FeS is abrasive and fouls exchangers; consistent filtration protects downstream equipment.
Change-out cost and downtime. With large-format elements, fewer changes per year means less labour and less exposure to the amine stream during service.
Recommended filter elements
High-flow pleated elements in the 6-inch class are the workhorses here. Widely used OEM references include Pall's Ultipleat Profile II family, for example:
For each of these, R+F FilterElements offers a dimensionally compatible replacement that fits the existing housing. Browse the full Pall high-flow range or use the filter finder to match by OEM number.
Maintenance & change intervals
Change intervals depend on solvent quality and particulate load, so use differential pressure as the practical trigger: replace elements when ΔP reaches the housing's recommended maximum rather than on a fixed calendar. Keeping a consistent element specification makes ΔP trends comparable over time.
