Detailed analysis
The difference is one of guarantee. An absolute rating is a measured, repeatable value from standardized multi-pass testing: a 1 µm absolute element removes at least 99.9 % of 1 µm particles every pass. A nominal rating describes only typical performance and is not comparable between manufacturers.
Because nominal ratings are not standardized, a "10 µm nominal" element from one supplier can perform very differently from another. Where downstream equipment or product quality depends on tight particle control, that variability is unacceptable — which is why absolute ratings dominate critical duties.
Nominal media, however, are cost-effective and entirely appropriate for bulk clarification and pre-filtration ahead of a finer absolute stage, where they extend the life of the more expensive downstream element.
When to choose — Absolute
Specify absolute ratings for membrane pre-filtration, amine/condensate polishing, final filtration and anywhere reproducible, guaranteed particle removal is required.
When to choose — Nominal
Nominal ratings suit economical bulk clarification and coarse pre-filtration where a precise cut-off is not critical.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 10 µm absolute the same as a 10 µm nominal?
No. The absolute element guarantees 99.9 % removal at 10 µm; the nominal one only approximates it and is not standardized. They are not interchangeable in critical duties.
How is absolute efficiency measured?
By standardized multi-pass testing (e.g. ISO 16889), which yields the beta ratio — β = 1000 corresponds to 99.9 % efficiency at the rated size.
