RO Pre-Treatment in Pharmaceutical & Biotech Water Systems
Purified-water (PW) and water-for-injection (WFI) loops depend on stable, validated RO and EDI performance. High-flow pre-filtration removes the particulate and colloidal load that fouls membranes, keeping permeate quality and recovery consistent — and it does so with the documentation a regulated plant needs.
The challenge in this industry
Colloidal & particulate membrane fouling
Fines from softeners and carbon beds raise the fouling index and shorten RO membrane life if they are not captured upstream.
Validated, documented filtration
Regulated water systems need traceable filter media and material certification, not just a rated micron value.
Protecting downstream EDI & final filters
CEDI stacks and final sterilising-grade filters are expensive to foul; robust pre-filtration extends their service life.
Where it applies in a pharma water train
- Prefiltration of softener / city-water effluent ahead of the RO pass
- Capture of activated-carbon fines before the membranes
- Guard filtration protecting RO membranes in PW generation
- Prefiltration ahead of EDI / CEDI polishing
- Buffer- and utility-water prefiltration in biotech suites
What high-flow filtration does here
High-flow elements reduce particulate, colloidal and suspended-solids load and lower the fouling index ahead of the membranes. Dissolved salts and ions are removed by the RO membrane itself — the pre-filter protects it, it does not desalinate.
Housing & elements from one source
We supply the high-flow elements and a matching 316L housing from a single source, with EN 10204 3.1 material certification on request — one specification, one point of contact.

Frequently asked questions
Does the pre-filter remove dissolved salts for the RO?
No. The RO membrane removes dissolved salts and ions. The high-flow pre-filter removes particulate and colloidal matter so the membrane stays clean and keeps its rejection and recovery stable.
Can you provide 3.1 material documentation?
Yes. We can supply EN 10204 3.1 material certificates for the housing and the corresponding documentation for the elements, suited to validated pharma water systems.
